The New Accessory – Silk Scarves

I have to admit the title to this post might be a little misleading. Silk scarves are not exsctly a new accessory. In fact, silk scarves have been in the fashion scene since the time of Queen Nefertiti of Egypt, around the 13th century. But it wasn’t until the 18th century that we saw the beginning of the use of silk scarves as accessories. The trend rapidly grew on people when Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837 and wore silk scarves. During her reign, the silk scarf became a symbol of luxury. In no time men and women alike wore neckerchiefs, irrespective of their social class. However, the revolution and popularity of silk scarves increased when Hermès began manufacturing them in 1937.

Having said that, silk scarves are not a new accessory for me. I happen to love them and I have a little collection of some great finds. I love wearing them and styling them with my outfits especially during the warmer months. There’s something about a printed silk scarf that instantly elevates even the simplest outfit—whether in a loose knot with a button-down or tucked under the collar of a blazer for that effortless chic look. Even when tied in a basic bow over a tee like I’ve done can change what would be a boring outfit into Parisian chic by adding timeless elegance.

While silk scarves are typically pricier, there are plenty of beautiful silk scarves under $100 that have the same ageless appeal without the splurge. It’s an incredibly versatile accessory that can be styled in a myriad of ways. Come and hop on the wagon and take a gander at some great finds I’ve rounded up!
