As we slowly head into the warmer season I gradually get excited for the change in weather, outfits and decor. If you’ve been following me here for a while then you already know how much I’ve embraced the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic. While this may seem like a new-ish trend to most, it’s been relatively part of my summer style for quite some time. And although I don’t live by the coast per se, I find the aesthetic so relaxing and comfortable that I incorporate it throughout my home and even add peices to my wardrobe all year. I do however wish for endless summer days on the beach. After all, isn’t having comfortable, laid-back surroundings what summer days are all about?
So, what exactly is the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic, you may ask.
THE WARDROBE
Coastal grandmother is not only an aesthetic but it’s a lifestyle, if you will. Simply put, it embodies elements of coastal living and homemaking. It’s style is comprised of neutral, classic staples in very light shades. It’s crisp and clean, like a nod to ‘old money’ — but not flashy. You want to stick to earthy tones, like blues, greens, creams, white, and light pinks. Essential pieces include cotton long-sleeve shirts, light knits, button ups and hats. White jeans are clutch (preferably straight cut) as are linen casual trousers and high-quality tees. Simple midi dresses come in handy as well. These pieces will help you capture the vibe — even if you don’t live anywhere near the coast.
THE HOME
The coastal grandma style for the home has a duality: it is relaxed yet refined, casual but elevated. It conveys a warm, inviting, laid-back luxury without being overtly cozy or stuffy. The lines are clean, and the designs are minimal. Light, airy, coastal, while savoring domesticity and creating the feeling of a home by the sea. A lot of the decor can be accomplished by doing some antique shopping where you can find some really great coastal treasures.
