7 NEW ENGLAND GETAWAYS PERFECT FOR A WEEKEND

THE NEWPORT BRIDGE

Living in New England I have found many destinations that have something for everyone. And as we inch closer to warmer days and we begin to itch for an escape luckily we don’t have to go very far. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or something to do with the kids, New England is filled with charming small towns, scenic landscapes, and a plethora of outdoor activities, yes, even in the dead of winter. Check out these 7 of the top New England destinations (in no particular order) that you can visit and enjoy now.

WOODSTOCK, VERMONT

WOODSTOCK INN, VERMONT

As with most of New England, Vermont has stunning fall foliage and equally beautiful snow-covered hills during the height of winter. But did you know that spring is just as beautiful a time to visit Vermont? Best of all, you get the benefit of a lot less crowds. Stop in at Woodstock Inn, aka, ‘Vermont’s most beautiful address’ for it’s luxurious rooms, grand service and beautiful grounds. The town of Woodstock in particular is quieter and gorgeous in the spring. There’s plenty to do in this charming town, with fragrant blooms of lilacs adorning every street corner, and rainbows of tulips sprouting everywhere.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTES

ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM, BOSTON

You can’t not visit New England and not visit Boston. First, book your weekend getaway at the fabulous Mandarin Oriental of Boston for top notch service and an experience like no other! Then wander through Boston’s rich history on your next getaway through cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill. I suggest you make a stop at the New England Aquarium and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for a fantastic visual of architectural art and aquatic life. And don’t forget Boston’s incredible food scene ready to indulge all culinary enthusiasts.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

THE CLIFFWALK, NEWPORT RI

Ahhh, the good ole City by the Sea, my favorite stomping grounds. Newport, RI, is where rich history meets coastal charm. Like Boston, it’s known for it’s quaint cobblestone streets and charming shops, but it also happens to be a fun resort town steeped in history, you can see it in it’s opulent mansions from the gilded age neighboring the amazing coastline! There’s plenty to do for couples around town and lots of fun activities all year for families alike. And if you’re in it for the seafood then you’ve anchored in the right place.

MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT

THOMAS OYSTER CO, MYSTIC SEAPORT

The town of Mystic in CT is another gem to visit in New England, also famously known for the movie “Mystic Pizza” with Julia Roberts. This small town is perfect to visit all year long. Though the landscape and attractions vary with the seasons, the picturesque settings and warm and inviting hospitality remains. The Mystic Seaport Museum is iconic and a must-see for maritime enthusiasts. Within walking distance is Olde Mistick Village, a fabulous small village of custom gift shops, boutiques, and restaurants. There’s also The Mystic Aquarium, one of the most popular places to visit. These are just a few of the top places places to visit while in town, and we haven’t even touched on the food scene or the many beautiful places for accommodations available, like The Whaler’s Inn.

Old Orchard Beach, Maine

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE

Venture to Old Orchard Beach, MN, nestled between Kennebunkport and Cape Elizabeth, and take a stroll along the scenic pier, and watch as the bright lights light up the boardwalk with summer fun. Old Orchard Beach is located in Saco Bay, a massive space that curves beautifully in a cove. While the beach itself can get overlooked because of all the other bells and whistles of the town, it’s constantly being named on best beach lists. Shops and restaurants line up the downtown area, lobster is of course the food of choice and great no matter where you go.

Block Island, Rhode Island

STAIRS TO CORN COVE AND MOHEGAN BLUFFS, BLOCK ISLAND

Block Island is a fun little island just 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island. You take The Block Island Ferry from several spots, with Point Judith being the cheapest option to get to Block Island and it’s also the only one that runs year-round. On your 30 minute ferry ride from Pt. Judith you can bring your car or bikes to get around the island. The island may be small but it is full of of hiking trails, pristine beaches, shops, restaurants, a lively night scene and everything you’d expect from a charming New England coastal vacation. If you choose to go it without your bikes or car, renting a scooter is a must to get around town!

Westerly, Rhode Island

OCEAN HOUSE, WESTERLY RI

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back weekend or a romantic getaway with amazing coastal vibes, you will find both in Westerly, Rhode Island. Stay at the iconic Ocean House where there is no shortage of luxury amenities at the resort. Although the use of the private beach is limited to overnight guests of Ocean House, the beautiful property is a great place to visit for a day. Some activities to look forward to; lectures and open-house events, the Ocean & Harvest Spa with access to locker rooms, steam rooms, and relaxation rooms, self-guided audio art tours, just to name a few.
