If you follow me on Instagram you may be aware of my latest plant stories. As of last summer I have become more and more in love with the idea of having plants throughout the house. I have to admit I am not a gardener nor do I want to be. In fact one of my sons asked me the other day why is it that we never dug a garden for growing veggies and the like during the summer months. Simply put, I hate the sight of worms! The thought of finding these little creatures, among others, slip and slide around totally disgust me and they seriously freak me out, plus I hate getting dirt under my nails! (image pinned from)
For years my father-in-law used to grow a garden every summer. In fact, the last few years of his life he dedicated a section of a local nursery (owned by a good friend of his) to his personal use. He would bring along my boys to help him. It obviously made an impact on them since they still talk about those moments with Papa digging and playing in the garden. They enjoyed it very much and I think some day maybe one or two if not all three will probably grow a garden of their own.
My mom also has amazing skills at growing plants and so did her mother. She has lots of beautiful plants all over her home. I don’t know why I didn’t start growing plants sooner since I grew up with them all over the place. And the fact that I love them as much as flowers really baffles me… Anyway, better late than never. It wasn’t until she gave me the huge Croton that my interest finally took effect. I keep the pretty plant in my dining room in front of a window facing east and she’s doing really well. I’m taking great care of her since she is what I call a ‘high maintenance plant.’ I’m determined and dedicated to having that green-thumb skill and I’m also teaching Gloria to do the same. Last month I grew paper whites from bulbs and they were a huge success! I did a post on that, you can still see it here, and I posted the final results on Instagram. I got lots of great feedback and questions from you guys and I’m so happy to know this is something you all enjoy! I can’t wait to start my spring bulbs for daffodils, hyacinths and tulips! Stay tuned for those.
I’ve just begun propagating from two of my plants. I took several leaves from the Monstera and several leaves from the Croton and hopefully they’ll succeed and grow some roots for me to plant and grow new ones. I’ll have to do a little research to find out whether there is a proper time of year to do this, in any case, I have clips of what I did on my insta-stories and you can check them out. In the meantime I’ll continue to post the progress, or lack of, for you all to see. So, this has become my new hobby and according to my husband, he’s thankful that it’s not an expensive one…yet!
