East Coast Girl

I can’t believe we’re already half way through July! The moment 4th of July comes and goes, summer pretty much tends to fly by. One thing I’m looking forward to is what we’ve now made into our annual summer trip to Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Last year we took a visit up there for the first time and absolutely loved it. We loved it so much that we can’t wait to go back again in August.

I’ve gathered a few summer “must-dos” to share with you in case you find yourselves a little bored or in need of some summer inspo. Since the season is so short I really try to find time for some of my favorite summer activities before it slips away. Here’s a roundup of some of my summer must-dos, even better if you’re here on the east coast.

SUMMER MUST-DOS

  • BEACH DAYS WITH A BOOK By far my favorite thing to do all summer! I’m currently reading Elin Hilderbrand’s Swan Song which also happens to be her last book of her Nantucket series!!!
  • BIKE RIDES & ICE CREAM When I’m in Newport I love riding bikes along the coast and sometimes we bring them to the beach or to ride around the beautiful bird trails where there is a Wildlife Refuge. And of course we ride to many of our favorite ice cream shops around town. I finally decided to buy my own bike. (I got this one which is so chic.) Wait for Prime Day Deals though, might be at an even better price!
  • NEWPORT POLO Every Saturday all summer long there are Polo games, as long as there is no heavy rain. This is such a fun event to watch with friends and family. BYOB, charcuterie, chairs and throw blankets ’cause lawn tickets are just $20, and your well behaved furry friends are welcomed too!
  • MOVIE NIGHTS OVER BONFIRES Backyards aren’t just for gardening! Watching movies outdoors on a projector is a thing in our home especially when you add a bonfire along with it! But not just during the fall season. The kids love it because it’s a great way to take advantage of the late cool summer evenings. Did anybody say s’mores?
  • VISIT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS MARKET Skip the grocery store and load up on super fresh fruits and veggies. You’ll also find some of the best made pies!
  • PICK YOUR OWN BLUEBERRIES It’s blueberry season! I’m so looking forward to picking Maine blueberries this year. I think we’re going to try to visit Ives Blueberry Farm in Saco since it’s closest to us and their berries will be ready for picking by the time we arrive. Also, I dug up this Blueberry Scones recipe from Martha Stewart’s archives and can’t wait to make it.
  • HOST A CRAWFISH BOIL I hosted this once before (with much success!) and it’s high time I did it again. Gather your friends together this summer for a delicious, messy but super fun crawfish party! I’m thinking crawfish, shrimp, corn and potatoes mixed in all that amazing creole seasoning!
  • GO ANTIQUE OR THRIFT SHOPPING Oddly enough I used to go antiquing (is that even a word?) when my boys were little. I don’t do it as much anymore but when I do it’s typically during the summer. I really love finding unique items or little treasures from the past.
  • VISIT A LIVING MUSEUM I love history and visiting living museums is obviously one of the best ways to learn about the past. Old Sturbridge Village in MA is a fantastic little living museum of colonial times and is a perfect summer day activity for the whole family.
