Dressing in neutrals during the summer months is my go-to. Usually I tend to keep my choice of colors in the light realm but every once in a while I’ll jump to the dark side. When dressing in dark neutrals, the goal is to look effortlessly chic without looking muted. Fabrics and textures like linen, silk, cotton, raffia or straw are great options for summertime outfits. In my look here, I combine a black lightweight linen dress with a structured vegan leather handbag (similar here) and raffia platform sandals. The bold black creates a sophisticated look and is accented by a mix of relaxed summer materials in simple neutrals.
DARK SUMMER NEUTRALS
TIPS FOR WEARING DARK SUMMER NEUTRALS:
- Pick one dominant color (black or blue) and accent with other summer neutrals. In my outfit here I’m concentrating on my black dress and then added accessories in light beige, simple but chic. Similarly, blue and white together, (a summer classic!) or ivory is perfect.
- For wearing black in the summer, it’s really ALL ABOUT THE FABRIC. Make sure that whatever you do, grab breathable natural fabrics that are meant for hot climates, like linen and cotton, otherwise you’ll suffer the consequences.
- Choose interesting silhouettes. A little black dress can be gorgeous or meh, and stifling hot depending on the cut. Beat the heat while wearing black, choose more flowy silhouettes like lightweight maxis, they don’t cling to your body and will make you feel a lot more comfortable if you’re out in the sun. I love the old school glamour silhoulette of this dress with it’s square neckline and midi length, perfect for a summer evening.
- Add a little extra to your neutral outfit with pattern. A silk scarf is a versatile wardrobe accent piece that can do that to just about any outfit. You can tie a scarf on as a belt, you can tie it to your neckline to create extra interest around a short sleeved shirtdress, or wrap it around the handle of your handbag.
