You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy this insanely delicious cocktail! And as with many other things in life, Irish coffee happened to be invented purely by accident. Chef Joe Sheridan of Limerick, was welcoming American passengers on a frigid night in 1942 at what is now Shannon International Airport. Sheridan added whiskey to their coffee to warm them up telling them they were being served Irish coffee.
This smooth and delicious cocktail consists of hot coffee, Irish Whiskey and sugar, although some recipes specify that brown sugar be used. It is stirred and then topped with thick cream. The coffee is meant to be drunk through the cream.
