10 Must-Do Activities for a New England Fall Bucket List

For me, fall in New England feels like a deep breath after a busy summer. It’s the time of year I want to slow down, take long drives just to see the leaves, and spend cozy afternoons with family. Whether it’s apple picking, walking through a small town, or sipping hot cider on a chilly night, these simple moments are what make autumn here so special. If you check even a few of these bucket list ideas off this season, you’ll come away with memories that last well beyond the leaves.🍂🍁

1. Go Leaf Peeping

Nothing beats driving through Vermont’s Green Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, or the Berkshires in Massachusetts to catch peak foliage. Plan a weekend road trip and stop for cider along the way.

2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Head to a local farm to pick the perfect pumpkin. Many spots also have hayrides, corn mazes, and apple cider doughnuts to make it a full fall outing.

3. Take a Scenic Train Ride

The Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire or Essex Steam Train in Connecticut offer breathtaking views of fall foliage you can’t see from the road.

4. Tour Historic New England Towns

Spend a day in places like Salem, MA, Woodstock, VT, or a personal favorite, Mystic, CT. These towns are filled with colonial charm, cobblestone streets, and seasonal events.

5. Enjoy Apple Picking

Grab a basket and head to an orchard. Fresh apples, warm cider, and homemade pies make this tradition a must every autumn.

6. Attend a Harvest Festival

Visit Topsfield Fair in MA or the best and largest fair in the northeast, The Big E also in MA. Smaller community fairs like our local Hebron Harvest Fair pop up all across the region with live music, craft vendors, and the best farm-fresh food.

7. Hike a Mountain Trail

Cooler temperatures make it the perfect time to hike. Try Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire or Sleeping Giant in Connecticut for rewarding views.

8. Sip Seasonal Beverages

Warm up with local cider, pumpkin-flavored coffee, or craft beers from New England breweries known for their fall releases.

9. Visit a Covered Bridge

Vermont and New Hampshire are dotted with historic covered bridges. They’re especially beautiful framed by streams and autumn leaves.

10. Cozy Up by the Coast

Don’t skip the shoreline. Our beloved Newport, Rhode Island offers plenty to do throughout the fall season. From picking your own pumpkins, lantern rail tours to walking ghost tours around the town. You can also find quieter beaches in the fall, where you can enjoy sea breezes, seafood, and coastal views without the summer crowds.
