You’ll learn what to clean, what to unplug, how to avoid odors, and the best ways to come back to a stress-free space. Whether you’re leaving for a weekend getaway or an extended trip, this vacation home prep checklist will help you feel confident and organized before you go.
Pre-Vacation House Cleaning and Prep Guide
1. Declutter Key Areas Before You Pack
Focus on surfaces, floors, and high-traffic spots. Tidy up living areas, kitchen counters, and bathroom vanities so nothing feels overwhelming when you return.
Woven storage baskets – great for stashing clutter quickly
Drawer organizers – perfect for last-minute tidying in the kitchen or bathroom
2. Do a Full House Cleaning Before You Leave
I have a cleaning service and I make sure to schedule their visit right before we plan to leave. Otherwise, just wipe down surfaces, vacuum floors, and remember to run the dishwasher. Also, don’t forget to take out the trash in every room to avoid odors.
Robot vacuum – cleans while you finish packing or leave it running with a scheduled shut off time
All-purpose cleaner set – eco-friendly or refillable options
Microfiber cloths – for dusting and polishing surfaces
3. Empty the Fridge and Take Out the Trash
Toss perishables and check for expiration dates. Empty all trash cans, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms.
Fridge deodorizer – like a baking soda pod or stainless steel odor absorber
Touchless trash can – looks sleek and contains smells better
4. Laundry: Wash, Dry, Fold, and Put Away
This is by far my number two must–do before going away on a trip. There’s nothing better than coming home to an empty hamper. Wash all your clothes, towels, and sheets before you go.
Wool dryer balls – reduce drying time and are reusable
Collapsible laundry basket – easy to store and carry
Gentle linen spray – adds a fresh scent to clean sheets
5. Set Up a Fresh Welcome Home
This is my absolute number one to-do chore before going away on vacation in my household! I always, always, always make sure all the beds have clean sheets and fluffy pillows. It’s literally the best thing to come home to after sleeping on other beds.
Luxe sheet sets – the bedding essentials
Room spray or diffuser – adds a fresh feel as soon as you walk in
6. Secure Your Home and Save Energy
Unplug small appliances, adjust the thermostat, and double-check all windows and doors. Consider setting timers for a few lights.
Smart plug or outlet timer – automate lamps or coffee makers
Programmable thermostat – conserve energy while you’re away
7. Prep for Pet or Plant Care
Leave clear instructions (and supplies) for anyone checking in on your pets. I water and group my plants in one spot for easier care.
Self-watering plant globes or spikes – I make sure to fill my globes plus they’re perfect for short trips
Automatic pet feeder – ideal if a sitter’s only stopping by once a day
Pet camera with treat dispenser – a great option to always check on your pets
8. Finish Any Lingering Chores
Make sure to clear the mailbox (I always put a hold on our delivery), and run the garbage disposal with lemon slices to keep it smelling fresh.
