With Glor and I spending much more time looking for ways to entertain ourselves we came across the wildly popular coffee drink that has taken the internet by storm. And just in time for the warmer months ahead! Viral videos of people making this coffee drink has made it popular, but the iced drink has actually been around for much, much longer than we think.
The Dalgona coffee originates in South Korea and India. And what at first seemed like an Instagram trend has turned out to be amazingly delicious. It in some ways reminds me of the iced Vietnamese coffee I love so much. Dalgona however is much prettier, yes that whipped topping is a sight to enjoy and is incredibly easy to make. Glor and I took turns whipping up the espresso and watched with glee as it turned from a dark liquid to a light and fluffy treat!
INGREDIENTS:
(MAKES 2 SERVINGS)
3 tablespoons instant espresso powder
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup hot water
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups milk of choice
dash of cinnamon powder
INSTRUCTIONS:
- In a medium bowl combine the espresso, sugar, hot water and a pinch of salt. Using a handheld mixer, beat on high for 3 to 4 minutes or until thick and creamy.
- Add vanilla extract and whip another minute or until thick and close to stiff peaks.
- Fill two glasses with ice and add milk to each. Top with the whipped coffee and sprinkle with cinnamon. Stir the whipped coffee into the milk enjoy!
Glor and I took turns whipping up the espresso and couldn’t wait to try the finished product! The thing I love most about making this drink is that it’s easily customizable. You can add whatever flavoring you like, whatever milk you prefer, whatever topping and even make it caffeine free!
I think next time I’ll try almond extract and perhaps use half & half instead of milk for an extra creamy drink! A sprinkling of freshly ground nutmeg would be nice. Powdered cocoa is also another popular topping or better yet, freshly grated chocolate. I will definitely be making this drink ALL SUMMER LONG and maybe add a dash of liquor for a fabulously cold cocktail!
